Do you want to speak more clearly and write better sentences? Linking words help you connect ideas, explain reasons, show differences and organise your message.
At HSF Training Center, we encourage you to learn these expressions through meaningful examples and everyday practice. Our two learning posters explain useful linking words and show three examples for each expression.
Choose the right word for your message
Add information: and, in addition, furthermore, moreover.
“The course is practical. Moreover, it is affordable.”Show contrast: but, although, however, whereas, in contrast.
“Although the task was difficult, we completed it.”Give a reason: because.
“I am learning English because I want to communicate with more people.”Show a result: so, therefore, consequently, as a result.
“She practised every day. As a result, her speaking improved.”Present a choice or an alternative: or, instead of.
“You can call us or send a message.”Give an example: for example.
“We practise workplace communication, for example, welcoming visitors.”Describe actions happening at the same time: meanwhile.
“One group prepared a presentation. Meanwhile, the other group checked the answers.”Explain what may happen if an action is not taken: otherwise.
“Save your work; otherwise, you may lose it.”
A useful grammar tip
Pay attention to sentence structure and punctuation:
“I was tired, but I finished my homework.”
“Although I was tired, I finished my homework.”
“I was tired. However, I finished my homework.”
These sentences express a similar contrast, but the linking words follow different patterns. Also, use instead of + a noun or an -ing form: “We walked instead of taking a taxi.”
Practise with us!
Complete each sentence with the most suitable expression:
because · although · moreover · otherwise
I joined the English course ______ I want to improve my communication skills.
______ she was nervous, she gave a clear presentation.
The lessons are useful. ______, they include practical activities.
Leave early; ______, you may miss the bus.
Share your answers in the comments, then write one sentence using a linking word from the posters.
Study a few expressions at a time, read the examples aloud and use them in your own sentences. Choose words that make your meaning clear.
